Doo Doo's Bakery History
My family and I moved to Bailieboro, Ontario in July 1997 from Calgary, Alberta with the intention of opening a business. We wished to raise our children in the country and we felt a small business serving rural community needs would enable us to support our lifestyle choice.
We purchased the property at 187 County Road 28 in the hamlet of Bailieboro on October 31, 1997 and began renovations shortly thereafter. We had originally planned a restaurant/coffee shop servicing the local farmers and the tourist industry, with future plans to add a garden centre and gift shop featuring my husband’s wood working items. Unfortunately my husband died resulting from an accident the following March, but I managed to complete the renovation and open our store in spring of 1998. Because of the lack of my husband’s input, the original plan for Doo Doo’s had to be dramatically modified over the next several years.
This period of time was a learning process where our customer base slowly became apparent and identified what their needs were. We came to realize that rather than specialty coffee, high end giftware, pizza or wifi …. what our customers appreciated and returned for was comfort food and simply good quality, unpretentious country baking. As Doo Doo’s Bakery developed a reputation for quality baking, in particular buttertarts, the customer base also continued to grow to include destination shoppers such as the “foodies” from urban areas, inclusion in bus tours and invitations to annual festivals.
Focusing on our fresh country baking has taken Doo Doo’s from a struggling new business to an award winning bakery striving to meet increased production demands and employing 8 people.
(As to the name, Doo Doo is my family’s nickname for me.)
